Defy gravity

What if we dare to defy stereotypes? If we decide to swim against the current? To face our fears of rejection of what others think of us and make a change? To do good and stand for what it right? That would make a significant change in society. That is what true heroes are all about, people willing to fight for what is good because they are realistic, they take reality as they are.

There are famous stories that remind us that fighting for what is good, doesn’t mean that we are accepted for it. There have been tragedies, the Ancient Greek ones, that shows us that people to abide for what is good is the least popular option. The popular musical «Wicked» shows us this dilemma and the origin story of the evil witch that fought for what is good and became unpopular.

«Elphaba, why couldn’t you
Have stayed calm for once?
Instead of flying off the handle!
I hope you’re happy

I hope you’re happy now
I hope you’re happy how you’ve
Hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you’re clever

I hope you’re happy

I hope you’re happy, too
I hope you’re proud how you
Would grovel in submission
To feed your own ambition

So though I can’t imagine how
I hope you’re happy right now

Elphie, listen to me, just say you’re sorry!

You can still be with the wizard
What you’ve worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted

I know

But I don’t want it
No, I can’t want it anymore
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap!

It’s time to try defying gravity
I think I’ll try defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down»

Gravity is a constant reminder of what we can’t do. It is a limit for us to aspire and dream about impossible things. Is an impossibility we can’t defy. Is a way of nature to tell us we can rule most of it, but not all, gravity has the last word. Which is better: to be popular knowing you didn’t stand for what is good, or to be unpopular doing good?
