Life is dangerous
We can’t control every aspect of our lives; there is always something threatening us: nature, technology, society, etc. There are all kinds of dangers out there, in our lives there are also dangers we are constantly exposed to: intimidation, humiliation, isolation, feeling dumb, unaccepted, useless and rejection; all of them are fears we face in our daily lives.
We may not control what is outside, but we can control what happens inside us by making ourselves a culture of safety: friends, thoughts, sports, hobbies and ideas we can choose. These habits help us live a better life and enrich our everyday experiences.
Suppose you go to the beach and you carry a towel with you, and you lay the towel far from the sea because you don’t want it to get wet. Suddenly the sea comes and damps the towel. Damn the sea, why come with such force and wet your towel!!! Is the sea to blame? It did wet the towel. Curse the sea, punish it, yell at it, hurt it. Any of these options sound ridiculous because the sea will still do what it does: come and go. It is our fault that the towel gets wet, we can put it in a safe place or watch that it doesn’t get wet.
As the sea does what it does so do people around us: they do what they do, we can’t expect to change them. It is absurd, but we can change how we react and do with ourselves in spite of others. There will always be danger, but it is up to us how we face it.
