Love seen through 8 year-olds
What is love? That is a question that roams everyone’s life at a certain point. We may look for answers in every book known, or great thinkers, religions, traditions, cultures and each and everyone of them will have an opinion, a complex one. But when CAFE&co. decided to go on lurking into every type of answers possible, we found out what the simplest and authentic minds will tell us about L-O-V-E in a philosophical chocolate session with 15 kids.
What is love?
– it is something you do
We’ve got a date when we celebrate love, when is it?
-February the 14th
And what do you do to celebrate it?
– We write letters to the people we care about
– We give hugs and kisses to those we love
– We give them gifts
– We do things that others like, like behaving with my parents so they are happy
So what is to LOVE?
– When you do nice things even though you don’t like them
– Give presents
And if they don’t like them?
– Well, then you now know what they don’t like and do like for the next time
– What matters is the attention to make them happy
– It doesn’t matter to fail, you will get it next time
How do we begin to love someone?
– You need time to get to know them
– Play with them
– Talk about things each like
– Have fun together
What happens if I don’t want to play your game?
– Then we will talk about what we like and dislike so we agree on playing one game at a time
– You talk and agree so we all can have fun
Is it the same to love a thing, like my shoes and love my parents?
– NOOOOOO (in chorus)
– You may like your shoes and say you love them but it is not love
– You can’t love things, you only love people
– You can love anyone, but not anything
– You may like things like shoes, or playing a sport, or whatever, but not love them
Can I love my dog?
– Yes you can, because it is alive
How can I love my dog?
– You feed him
– Rub his tummy
– Play with him
– Run
I have a friend and I love her, I rub her tummy, feed her and play with her, is that love?
(They all laugh)
– No, she is not a dog!
– You do other things with your friends, you can’t treat them like you do your dog
– Because you talk with your friend and you can know what they like
– It is love, but different
– You can love in many ways but not the same
Do you love your parents the same way you love a friend?
– No, they are different
– We love them different, because our parents love us more
– It is complicated
We are spending time together, are we friends?
– Not yet
– We don’t know you
– We talk but we don’t know what you like
– I will invite you to my birthday party
– We haven’t had much fun
– I’ll wait and see
Ok, how do you love your parents?
– We tell them, not much but the necessary
– We don’t want to tell them all the time, it is annoying
– We kiss them
– We hug them without harming them
– We play with them
– We behave and so they are happy, even when we don’t have fun
And when they get angry at us?
– They can punish us and yell but deep down we know they love us
– They will always love us because they care
– No matter how bad I behave they love me
– We make them sad but they still love us
– They are mad and complicated but they love me
So when they get angry they love us more?
– Not necessarily
– They just get mad, but they don’t change the love they feel
– If they hurt us then they don’t love us, because love doesn’t harm
– Sure, they love us because they want us to behave
– We may not like it, but it is for our own sake
– Sometimes I want to be little, like my brother so they can play more with me
Are we friends yet?
– Sure
– I had fun
– I am tired but ok
– Can I have chocolate?
– OK
– Bye
