Where is the meaning?
The book «Nothing» by Janne Teller talks about a young boy who loses meaning of everything and his school friends are trying to help him find it. But the main problem is, what is that meaning? There is no one that teaches us to have one and if we have one, then can we define it or identify it? If there is none, then we tend to nothingness, and what is the point to live?
People are not keen to realize new things, they get stuck in what they know because of the fear of trying new things, explore new places, live new things. The very thought of thinking differently causes us a crisis. We pretend everything is alright, which is why after a while we explode, we have a crisis, because we are faced with new things that torment our existance, threatens our life and cannot be solved by ignoring them. That is what happens to the main character of the book; he is faced with emptiness because there is no one to answer his questions. It is a matter of life and death.
His friends explore his quiestion and try to find an answer, not a simple task for 11 year-old kids. However, life’s answers are not complicated, and the younger we are, the clearer we see. Those kids share their most meaningful things to show that life is worth it; that nothing is just an empty space when you are afraid or not willing to live any more. The threat of death is constant, they don’t want to lose a friend, so they give all they have.
