Would you go against yourself?
The movie Hacksaw Ridge is about a soldier that remains firm at his moral belief at a time of war by being in the army without carrying a gun, even to save himself. Imagine a soldier that doesn’t have the proper means to defend the country, not even himself. This poses a problem to all the team because the «strength of the team is by their weakest link», and by not using a gun, the whole batallion becomes fragile, or so they think.
Captain Glover: Most of these men don’t believe the same way you do, but they believe so much in how much you believe.
The way people react to his beliefs becomes an insult for his other soldier friends because the idea of non-violence is seen as an act of showing superiority above others as if having a religion made us better or idealistic. His soldier partners even try to make him look like he is crazy. However, what we believe becomes a part of us; if we ditch our beliefs, we are useless.
Sergeant Howell: Private Doss does not believe in violence. Do not look to him to save you on the battlefield.
The agression taken for our sense of life can be bearable if we are able to stand up for whatever we are fighting for: our country, religion, ideals, etc. There are great examples of people that are willing to take whatever life brings them and continue to live according to what they believe is right. Sargent Doss had to put up with the army’s rules and the injustice of the idea that a gun can protect us from any danger that may come. Nonetheless, what happens if the danger is not physical? Would you dare to leave all behind to mingle?
Desmond Doss: I don’t know how I’m going to live with myself if I don’t stay true to what I believe.
Violence is not the answer. It may seem like the only answer but our actions and ideas are more dangerous than any physical attack. To make a better world there are many ways people have fought without guns: Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Theresa, Malala, Immaculé, Aung San Suu Kyi, among many others that speak of peace and make peace.
Desmond Doss: With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don’t seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.
Passive resistances may take longer than a violent action, but its effect lasts forever. A gun doesn’t makes us stronger; it gives us an advantage, but it doesn´t make us braver, nor better. If we use our head, we are able to find out more ways to solve a problem than reducing it to a gun.
Sargent Desmond Doss shows us that what we belive and what we do must be the same thing. We cannot be victims of the current situations of the world; if we are able to speak and do something, what are we waiting for?
