Gentleman in distress
Harry Hart: [Quoting Ernest Hemingway] There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.
The movies Kingsmen is all about rescuing the forgotten image of the gentleman, as a knight in shining armour defends the weak and the unprotected (women and children) against the evil forces of the world.
In a way, the secret service helps people to reconsider their place in the world: we don’t need to be born in a high-class to become a gentleman. It may seem that young people have lost their manners and become despotic: to think that having money can allow us to do anything, the lack of ethics reflected in a lost of meaning, to live an easy life blaming others, to stay in the confort zone without taking risks. These and other examples are the ones that society today reflects.
We need to break paradigms and Kingsmen allows us to step up for the greater good instead of letting others take the reins of our lives. A gentleman is a person that knows who he/she is and does, not only for necessity or duty but because he/she wants it.
Harry Hart: [Quoting William Horman] «Manners maketh man.» Do you know what that means? Then let me teach you a lesson.
John Henry Newman talks about the gentleman’s qualities. It is not only for men but also for women. A gentleperson is someone that is capable of making others comfortable with their presence. It is a person who knows what to do and when to do it. The excellence of actions and the cultivation of the mind among other great qualities that distinguish them in good and bad and taste.
