Do we need superheores?
The movie The Incredibles talks about a family that has superpowers and instead of using their powers to their advantage they decide to help those who can’t help themselves. They share a double life: an apparent normal way of living that doesn’t fit in their way of being, and the chance to be useful to the world by protecting it.
In a modern world there is no need for superheroes because they can’t prevent disaster; I mean, whenever they help they get everything else destroyed; there is no chaos control just to save the world from danger, or that is what the modern economical infrastructure says. There will always be bad guys, but if it doesn’t cost much, then it is ok to put up with them. That is why superheroes must live like outcasts and pretend to be «normal», but they have the ability to see life in a different way.
People are just afraid of what they don’t understand, so they reject anyone who doesn’t seem normal orwho just seems different: in their ways of living, thinking, or being. It seems that being a superheroe opens up the door to other dimensions that people are not prepared to face, just like philosophy sees the world in a different way to analyze it.
Supeprheroes come and save the world. Everytime there is danger they are here. But are they good for society? Are they helping us by leaving us undefended? Does the world need someone else’s capabilities instead of its own? It seems that superheroes save us, but we are not capable of doing it by ourselves, we have become a society that only recieves experiences, technology, excitement from others instead of having a life of their own, to be worth of distinction and prizes, to be able to change the world instead of leaving it in the hands of others. What are we waiting for? We have wasted time and energy by just being perpetually saved, instead of taking the matter in our own hands. Are we our own superhero?
