The Truth about The Grinch

Dr Seuss talks about the frenzy of people during Christmas when they lose themselves in superfluous things as shopping, fashion, consumerism that prevents us from getting the true sense of the holidays. People become anxious and less caring for others. Everything becomes a competition of who bought the best gift, decorated their houses the most beautiful and who was the best citizen of all the county. Everyone wants to show-off who they want to be instead of accepting who they are. Violence increases because we all want gifts, our insecurities are floating around us; not only because of the delinquency but also for personal reasons because we struggle to become what we couldn’t be the whole year.

The problem with the Grinch is that people in Who-ville tend to be superficial and only want to pretend something they are not. The Grinch is the only one that is authentically who he is and is rejected for seeing things with an objective eye, without pretending everything is all right and trying to impress others with what they have. People need to accept who they are and love what they have instead of loving what they want without accepting who they are.

Dr Seuss reminds us of the true purpose of Christmas, but also that all year we should be who we are and be better. Not to waste time in things that don’t matter and keep us from being better. It is a wake-up call to be authentic and do what we love without paying attention to what others think of us. It is to be true to who we are and find happiness in it.

The Grinch is not only on Christmas but in every festivity when we lose the true sense of what we really mean to celebrate instead of getting gifts.
